Shoulder Pulley Exercises

There are many different kinds of injuries and conditions that affect the shoulders, including bursitis, rotator cuff injuries, dislocation, and fractures. Whatever the cause of your shoulder pain, physical therapy can help bring relief and restore function. Along with consulting a physical therapist, you might consider adding some physical therapy products to your treatment plan. Heating and cooling pads can soothe tired muscles, while shoulder pulleys can facilitate gentle exercises to improve range of motion.

Shoulder pulleys are used in many physical therapy clinics, but you can also purchase your own. They are inexpensive and easy to use. The following guide from Scooters-4-Rent walks you through some basic exercises you can perform at home using your shoulder pulleys. Make sure to check in with your doctor and your physical therapist before starting this exercise program.

Flexion

When you are learning how to use your pulleys at home, shoulder flexion is a good place to start. Simply hang your pulleys over a door and stand with your back facing the door. Hold the pulley handles in both hands, then pull the handle down slowly on your uninjured side. Doing this will cause the opposite hand to rise, gently stretching the injured shoulder upward. Let your shoulder and arm move forward and up while keeping your elbow straight, and use the pulleys to lift your arm until you feel a slight strain in your shoulder. Stay in this position for two seconds, then use the pulleys to gently lower your arm back down to your side. You can repeat this motion 10 times.

Abduction

To practice shoulder abduction, hang your shoulder pulleys over a door and stand with your back facing the door. Hold the pulley handles in both hands and spread the arms outward. With the arms in this spread position, slowly lower the handle on your uninjured side so that your injured shoulder is gently stretched outward. Stop when you feel tension in your shoulder, and hold the position for two seconds. Then gradually lower your arm back down to release the tension. You can repeat this motion 10 times.

Internal Rotation

To practice internal rotation, hang your shoulder pulleys over a door and stand with your back facing the door again. Hold the pulley handles in both hands, and rest the hand on your injured side behind your hip or lower back to rotate the shoulder slightly inward. Pull the handle on your uninjured side down so that the hand behind your back is pulled upward. Continue pulling until you feel a gentle stretch in your shoulder, and hold the position for two seconds. Then slowly release, and repeat 10 times.

Final Notes

For an easier starting point, you can perform these exercises while facing the door instead. This is a good option for those with very limited mobility. These exercises can also be performed sitting in a chair if needed.
